Whitman letter

Walt Whitman captures the spirit of the U.S.A when he tells people “it's not just about ourselves”. This captures people because they realized he’s right and they figured out that it wasn't just about themselves and that they should treat people how they wanted to be treated. He wanted everyone to be treated equally and for people to walk around in someone elses shoes. He said “ I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the wounded person” (359 textbook). Thats an example of Whitman putting himself in someone elses shoes. Walt Whitman captures the spirit of the U.S.A by doing all that and also how he got everyone through his words to be treated equally.

Walt Whitman captures the spirit of the U.S.A. through his poetry. An example of one of his poems that captures the spirit is, “I Hear America Singing”. Whitman explains that U.S. citizens in this poems and all over the U.S.A. enjoy the hard work they do. From the poem, “I Hear America Singing” he says, “The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands”. This is proving the fact that the characters in the poem enjoy their jobs.Another quote from Whitman in the poem “I Hear America Singing” is, “The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck.” These quotes demonstrate the hard work of the characters in the poem, but also that they enjoy the hard work they do.

Walt Whitman, described as one of the two greatest poets of the nineteenth century, captured the spirit of America through his writing. ”I Hear America Singing”, and “Song of Myself” are both commendable and efficient products created. In “I Hear America Singing,” it illustrates marvelous explanations about hard work, each individual person and how each represent a different part in society. “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else...” Whitman’s writing introduces a theme which is accompanied with personal opinions. Opinions elaborated such as in “Song of Myself”, Whitman describes controversial situations in society such as helping a runaway slave before the civil war. “And gave him a room that enter’d from my own, and gave him some coarse clean clothes...” Whitman did not just capture America’s attention, Whitman expressed the good and the bad of society, and how Americans work together to solve issues.
Walt Whitman was one of the best writers of the late 19th century because he captures the spirit of the United States of America. In “I Hear America Singing”he says “The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam” this quote depicts the hard working spirit of the U.S. and loved their jobs. In section 10 of “Song of Myself” Whitman talks about the inequality in the U.S. with slavery. In this writing Whitman takes in a runaway slave that is wounded so Whitman takes him in and treats him the quote, “I had him sit at the table with me, my fire-lock lean’d in the corner.” Shows that he trusts the slave while still being sympathetic to him and it shows his strong belief in equality for all people. In “A Sight in the Camp in the Daybreak” Whitman asks “Who are you my dear comrade?” as he looks at the man on the last medical litter asking why the young soldier was killed , why they are fighting the civil war, and feeling sympathetic for the poor unfortunate young man. This shows people suffering and coming together to form a better union between the people and for the people, which is all about the spirit of the United States of America because it is in our constitution.

Several of Walt Whitman’s poems capture the spirit of The United States of America, in this case “I Hear America singing” illustrates the whole idea of society coming together to represent America. In this poem he refers to “The carpenter singing as he measures his plank or beam”, “The shoemaker singing as he sits on the bench”, and “The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat” each and everyone of these citizens represent the nation in a prideful way by singing. In "Song to myself (Section 10)" Whitman wrote "The runaway slave came to my house and stopt outside" and "Through the swung half-door of the kitchen I saw him limpsy and weak" In this quote Whitman explains his sorrow for all the African Americans that were treated poorly. Whitman's intention was to refer to the Civil War and the hardships they faced and to show that together as a nation nothing could break America. When Whitman incorporates all the actions that helped build up the country, he really captured the spirit of the U.S.A. Whitman being a 19th century writer who specified the difficult times happening at the moment, showed how America grew in terms of the equality between African Americans and Whites.

Walt Whitman, a well-known poet from the 19th century, painted a very broad picture of America and illustrated that through his writing. Whitman describes the thought of understanding other people and taking a walk in someone else’s shoes, also known as empathy, when he says “I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the wounded person.” (Elements of Literature textbook 356) This quote also portrays Whitmans opinions on slavery and expresses the fact that he does not mind sharing those opinions with the public. In the poem I Hear America Singing, where Whitman writes “I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,” (Elements of Literature textbook 352) the individuality of the country and still in each person inside of this country is advertised when he speaks about the varied; different, sounds he hears from each person. In many different ways the thought in Walt Whitman's writing portrayed the spirit of America.

Walt Whitman, through his poetry, captured the spirit of the U.S.A changing the norms of poetry by creating freeverse. When Whitman writes, “Other lands have their vitality in a few, a class, but we have it in the bulk of our people.” , Whitman identifies the main quality that Americans exhibit, the vigor and “vitality” that epitomizes the successful work ethic of the people of his time. Walt Whitman believed this country should be ruled by the people as he writes, “There is no week nor day nor hour when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their roughness and spirit of defiance.” Whitman is saying it is key to be defiant in standing up for our rights in this country. Whitman once said in his work, his main goal was to capture the American spirit and show what an ideal America could be and Walt Whitman was successful in doing so in many of his writings.

Walt Whitman, a renowned American poet of the 1800s, was never quite about his thoughts and beliefs, and his work goes to show. This was a man that worked with bold strokes upon a broad a canvas (Elements of Literature, A New America Poetry page 342). In many of his works, such as “Song of Myself”, he took the point of view of those with hard life and the horrors of the world, “I am the hounded slave, I wince at the bite of the dogs,Hell and despair are upon me, crack and again crack themarksmen, I clutch the rails of the fence, my gore dribs, thinn'd with theooze of my skin,” and “The mother of old, condemn'd for a witch, burnt with dry wood, her children gazing on,” (from “Song of Myself” section 33 Pg. 356). The people that lived lives of hardship where not the only one to be show to the world thru Whitman’s poems, the people that lived the mirror of those who suffered, “On a bank lounged the trapper, he was drest mostly in skins, his luxuriant beard and curls protected his neck, he held his bride by the hand,” (from “Song of Myself” section 10 pg. 353), capturing peoples happiest moments, “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else, The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly, Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.”, (“I Hear America Singing” pg. 352), and the beauty of the true lives of the American people. Walt Whitman wrote the beauty of both the dark and the light of the beautiful, yet terrifying, world he lived in and the people that surrounded and inspired him.

Letter to the world

Walt Whitmen captures the spirit of the United states of America in is broad writing, and his poems. One of his poems “ I Hear America Singing” stands out. This poem explains americans, how they work, how the mother and wife supports their family. “ I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear/ Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.” Whitmen talks about how Americans can have jobs and can have pride and freedom! “ The carpenter sings as he measures his plank or beam/ The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat.” Whitmen implies Americans can enjoy their jobs and buy what they want and be who they want to be! In all of his poems I feel like he relates or talks about America and Americans.

Letter to the world

Walt Whitman was a poet in 19th century America. He captures the spirit of the United States of America by putting the country's nationalistic views into his writing. Most Americans are very proud of their country. It is shown in the poem I Hear America Singing. "Each singing belongs to him or her and to no one else, the day what belongs to the day - at night the party of youngfellows, robust, friendly, singing with open mouths, their strong melodious songs."(Walt Whitman) This quote shows the content of the American people, which makes sense because he grew up in the era of good feelings. Another quote of his depicts the individuality of the American people, and it shows that no matter what you are allowed to pursue your dreams and freedom is why many sought refuge here from their homelands, as freedom is what we stand for. "The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam, The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work..." (Walt Whitman, I Hear America Singing) This quote shows individuality and the belief that one can be happy doing whatever one wants. Walt Whitman understood the spirit of the United States of America.
